In late September 2013 I completed my professional intuitive training, which makes this month my 13-year anniversary as an intuitive. I still have fond memories of that training program, the face-to-face component of which included just me and one other fellow student at the home of our trainer, Erin Pavlina.
As part of the program, we were asked by Erin to start with what she called “cadaver” readings. These involved reading the chakras of different clients – these were not actual cadavers, but they were not present in person, nor would we be speaking to them live on the phone. All we had was their photo. It was a way for us to ease gently into the practice of giving readings without freaking out about how we would perform in front of a client.
Those first readings were fun. Erin knew enough about the people who had volunteered to have their photo read, so she could give feedback about whether our impressions were accurate.
Then we moved on to phone readings. We went through the same process of tuning in to each person’s photo beforehand, then wrote down what we received about their chakras, plus a message from the guides. When I shared one message that came through about a particular man’s relationship with his brother, Erin said it was an important thing to tell him and “it’s going to be very relevant.” When she said this, I presumed aloud that they must have known each other, just as she had known the “cadaver” volunteers. She confirmed that she didn’t. “Oh, but then how do you know?” I asked. Erin looked at me without saying anything, but her facial expression said it all: “I’m a professional psychic, and I’m training you to be one as well. Duh!”
I was nervous but excited as we dialled the number of the first client, and thrilled when the information from the chakra reading and guides was said to be accurate. Then we progressed to face-to-face readings. I was amused by the fact that before each new client arrived, Erin would suddenly stand up from the couch, mid-conversation, a few seconds before her doorbell rang. Whether they arrived early, on time, or a little late, she seemed to sense the exact moment when she would need to leave the room to let someone in the front door.
An unintended lesson I received was that even a professional intuitive can dismiss their intuition at times (a lesson that’s continued to pop up for me over the past 13 years!). For example, when Erin brought a plate of honey-coated cashews out to the table on the first training day for a snack, I shared that I was vegan and didn’t eat honey. “Ohhh,” she responded. “I heard my guides say not to get the ones with honey, but I thought, ‘Why not? I like honey.’” Later, when preparing to read for another person over the phone, I got a specific message for her about the potential to find fulfilment through making jewellery. Erin frowned a little as if to say, “That doesn’t sound right.” But when I brought it up during the call, the client confirmed that she did indeed love making jewellery and wanted to turn it into a business. When the call ended, Erin gave positive feedback about the reading and explained that her logic had got in the way – the client was a previous trainee of hers, so she was aware that there had been a focus on growing an intuitive business, but never had there been any mention of jewellery before. She pointed out that this was a good example of how it’s best to trust what comes through intuitively, even if it clashes with what our brain or anyone else thinks is true.
Already Answered
One of the things that stuck with me afterwards was the cadaver reading experience. It was new to me, this idea of being able to tune in to a person without being physically present or hearing their voice, then to receive details about their life regardless.
As I began doing readings on my own, I continued to tune in before each one and write notes about the chakras and guides’ messages. I would share this information when the session began, then move on to the client’s questions. Later, I allowed people to send questions in advance if they wanted to. I would do the pre-tune as usual, then ask for guidance on their questions. By the time I called or met clients in person, I already had their answers written down. It was just a matter of communicating them.
It made me wonder if email readings could be a worthwhile option, particularly for people who were anxious about speaking to an intuitive, or who wanted answers to questions without necessarily wishing to explore or discuss them.
Email Reading Pros and Cons
In early 2015 I completed a round of practice email readings to see how it would it go. The feedback afterwards made it clear that people were keen for me to continue these readings beyond the free practice phase.
I generally find email readings more challenging in that there’s no feedback at all to help me know if I’m on track – especially when I’m trying to interpret an abstract image, or decipher what some of the details that come through may be referring to.
Although email readings don’t offer the same opportunity for validation or exploration that’s available during a conversation, they do have their advantages. For one thing, they tend to be a lot more convenient. No scheduling is required, so there’s usually a shorter wait time and they are accessible to anyone regardless of how full their calendar is or what time zone they live in. Plus, having it all written down means there’s less risk of forgetting the information (or misremembering it, which can happen!).
One woman who’d had different types of readings with me said that the email one felt the most special; she liked being able to read the message word-for-word whenever she wanted, and said that if we’d been on the phone, she’s sure she would have kept interrupting me with her own thoughts and therefore wouldn’t have received the information in the same way.
There was one particular piece of feedback that moved me deeply, and the following year it became the topic of my article A Tree Full of Stars. It served as the impetus needed for me to continue offering email readings, despite my uncertainty about whether they would be worth it, for either myself or others.
Messages from Guides
For the initial round of practice email readings, I included a message for each client after asking what their guides most wanted them to know to help them on their path (as I did with in-person, Skype, and phone readings). I didn’t invite anyone to send questions in. Then at the request of some clients, I shifted to offering readings that answered their specific questions, rather than receive a message that may be unrelated to what they wanted clarity on. Moving forward, my intention is to do both – questions are welcome, plus I will also be tuning in to ask what else may be helpful for you to know to assist you along your path.
One of the reasons for bringing this feature back is because of something I learnt from the intuitive program 13 years ago. I found my notes from a lecture Erin had given to prepare for our face-to-face training, and she had emphasised the point that every reading is a valuable opportunity to pass on messages from a client’s higher self and guides.
According to Erin, there are many types of spirits that may come through, but the guides are the ones that tend to be the most helpful and practical as they “can give the answers of most benefit.” She urged us to always ask the guides what a client most needs to know to help them on their path, because it may be a rare chance to pass on this information, especially if the client hasn’t been listening to their own intuition lately. I’ve found that this message would often be linked to what a client wanted to ask anyway, but not always. Sometimes it would be about an issue they hadn’t thought of in a while, or a dream they had given up on that was still worth pursuing, or an energetic imbalance to address, or any other number of things.
Synchronicity
While I haven’t offered many one-off email readings since introducing intuitive consultations (other than through the 10-week Clear Channel Package), I’ve noticed a lot of synchronicities over the past month or so that relate to them.
For instance, I provided intuitive consultations to a couple of previous clients who I hadn’t connected with in a long time, not since they’d received an email reading from me many years before. One of these clients had been the recipient of that reading referred to earlier in A Tree Full of Stars. Someone then randomly sent an old email reading she’d received from me over a decade ago, which included a message that appears to have been helpful at the time and still relevant today.
Then, during a recent group consultation, a vivid image came through for one of the participants that felt familiar to me. She confirmed that it had been from an email reading ages ago and that the vision was meaningful for her both then and now.
There have been other synchronicities too, and when I decided that I would offer these one-off email readings again by the end of September, even if for just a short phase, I saw something interesting. I made this decision while walking down the steps of a train station I rarely go to. At the bottom, there was a painting on a wall showing large white wings against a rainbow-coloured background. Seemed like a rather angelic sign to me :)
