Intuitive Clothes Shopping

clothes shopping

May 2025

I’ve previously written about auras, colours and clothes, but not about actually shopping for them (clothes that is, not auras!).

As someone who hasn’t typically taken much pleasure in clothes shopping before, I surprised myself and others when I recently signed up for a clothes-shopping adventure with a professional colour analyst and stylist. Even with expert help from the consultant, I regularly checked in with my intuition while viewing clothes, trying them on, and deciding what to buy and what to leave behind.

Here are some takeaways I took from that experience:

-       Clothes shopping can be fun! I spent hours looking at clothes – online and in person at various stores – and had a blast. Perhaps the social element had something to do with it; by having another person with me to chat to and hear their opinion on whether a particular outfit suited me, it felt less goal-oriented (compared to my usual attitude of, “let’s pick an item as quickly as possible so I can get out of here!”) and more like a playful excursion. Also, by consciously choosing to connect with my intuition before heading out to shop, it brought an extra element of excitement and exploration that I really enjoyed.

-       Clothes shopping need not contribute to waste, unethical practices, or environmental damage associated with the fashion industry. Many brands offer clothing made of natural fabrics that have been ethically sourced, plus there are some great high-quality pieces of clothing available second hand. Although I never used to like the idea of wearing clothes previously worn by other people, I’ve since learned that putting them through just one wash cycle is enough to remove old energetic imprints.

-       What we wear on the outside will affect how we feel on the inside, whether considering the style, fabric, or especially colour of clothing. For example, when the consultant held up a swatch of colours she had assessed as being most suited to me, I felt comfortable in my body. By contrast, after she showed another swatch with colours of different shades, it felt as though my energy was being drained out of me, particularly when they were held just below my face. She then picked up a swatch of mostly brighter colours – some of which were among my favourite colours. However, when they were placed on me while I saw my reflection in a mirror, it was as though they created a false note in my aura. They seemed to have a jarring or agitating effect. This experience reminded me of the Goldilocks tale, and I had to agree with the consultant that the first colour swatch was “just right.”

-       We must always honour what we feel when shopping, even if it doesn’t match what other people think. At one point, I tried on some pants that the stylist and shopkeeper (both of whom I trusted) thought looked great on me. The pants did fit well and they were comfortable enough, but they didn’t feel good for reasons I couldn’t really articulate. My people-pleasing side wanted to buy the pants so as not to be a party pooper, but I ended up walking away from that store empty handed, which was fine :)

-       I also learned that it’s okay to make a mistake. Clothes can almost always be returned due to a change of mind. In fact, the consultant pointed out that with online shopping, it can be wise to order the same type of item in different sizes to choose the best fit – meaning that the expectation is to return at least one thing from the get-go.

The next time you shop for clothes, try experimenting with your intuitive ability from beginning to end. What kind of clothing stores call to you? What colours uplift you? What styles feel true to you? What material feels best on your skin? What clothing can best express the inner qualities that you want seen by others? Playfulness, practicality, sensuality, eccentricity, seriousness, cheeriness, and more can all be reflected in what we choose to wear. While trying something on, check if it feels right, even if you can’t explain why. Finally, when it comes to deciding whether to take an item of clothing with you, ask your intuition if it’s a yes or no to purchasing it and claiming it as your own.

I hope you have as much fun with this as I did!
